Heal And Breathe As You Escape To These Calming Getaways On The Coast
Need a break from the concrete jungle but don’t know where to start? Why not escape to one of these calming coastal getaways and relax your mind at the same time?
Warning: this list is likely to grow over time!
Save it for later!
1. Ericeira, Portugal

Want to taste the sweet weather of Europe’s sunniest capital? Then head to Portugal, and more specifically to Ericeira, where warm weather also rhymes with surfing, beaches and delicious seafood.
Not to mention its breathtaking coastal walks that will take you from the old fishing village to the towering cliffs and beautiful waterfront.
And since Ericeira is quite small, you don’t have to worry about getting lost or being bothered by the incessant honking of cars, so common in big cities.
So, how’s that for a calming coastal getaway?
And for a more comprehensive guide to Ericeira, come this way!
2. Vang Vieng, Laos

Yes, I know, for those of us who know our geography, Vang Vieng isn’t actually located on the coast, but rather along a river (it counts, right?). So bear with me a second and let me tell you why I’ve included it in this list of soothing getaways.
If you’re familiar with the city, you know that despite its many charms, Vang Vieng was also mainly known for its rowdy atmosphere and was more like a party town where drunken tubing was a popular activity.
But, and fortunately for the town, everything has changed, and Vang Vieng is now known for what it should have been from the start: its fun outdoor activities, stunning nature and relaxed atmosphere.
So even though it’s not located on the coast per se, if you’re traveling to Laos, don’t hesitate to check out Vang Vieng!
3. Nusa Ceningan & Lembongan, Indonesia

What could be better for a calming getaway than an escape to islands with turquoise waters? I’d say nothing, and that’s one of the reasons why you should visit Nusa Ceningan or Lembongan, or both, as they’re pretty small and next to each other anyway.
Less crowded and more peaceful than their big sister Nusa Penida, if you love lounging on the beach, swimming with colorful fish, and discovering secret magical spots, then these islands are for you.
Honorable mention goes to Pacitan, on Java Island, for its natural landscapes, caves and beaches, but also for surfing.

4. Jeju, South Korea

Some may recognize Hawaii as a popular honeymoon destination, but in South Korea, Jeju wins that title.
The island, known for its romantic vibes with cozy cafes and jaw-dropping landscapes, makes it the ideal destination for any couple looking for a soothing yet adventurous trip.
Between hiking to ancient dormant volcanoes, sunbathing on serene beaches, or tasting local delicacies, all visitors, not just couples, are sure to make everlasting and magical memories on this special, lovely island.
And if you don’t have time to visit the island, you can always opt for Busan or Sokcho, which are great alternatives to Jeju but with a more urban vibe.
7 days on Jeju island? Here’s my itinerary!
5. Cebu, Philippines

The Philippines and its 7,000 something islands offer plenty of choices if you’re looking for a calming coastal getaway, but if you want to combine history, adventure and relaxation, then Cebu island is the perfect choice.
Head to Moalboal to experience canyoneering, go waterfall chasing around the island, admire the night views from the heights of Cebu city, or go island hopping.
An array of activities and the warmth of the Philippines await you in Cebu!
6. Mirissa, Sri Lanka

Located on the south coast of Sri Lanka, Mirissa, once under the radar, has since become popular for whale watching, its beautiful beaches, palm-lined roads, chill vibes, and panoramic sea views.
And if these reasons alone aren’t enough to convince you to visit, I don’t know what will.
Spend 3 days there sipping coconuts on the beach and tell me if your mind isn’t free of anxiety and worry after that.
7. Kaohsiung & Kenting, Taiwan

Kaohsiung may only be Taiwan’s second-largest city, but for us ocean lovers, it’s the perfect base for exploring the seaside, not to mention the perfect combination of modernity and tradition.
With its magnificient pavilions, temples, and museums, as well as ferry rides that take you to a relaxing island in just a few minutes, Kaohsiung is also the ideal starting point for day trips.
Want to discover a tropical paradise and leave the city behind? Head to Kenting (2.5 hours from Kaohsiung) where turquoise waters, beautiful hiking trails, and serenity await you!
8. Quy Nhon, Vietnam

Vietnam can be a little crazy. I mean, between the countless scooters you have to weave to cross the road, the scams and the sometimes crowded attractions, you’ll quickly wand to find a place to unwind and enjoy a moment of respite.
Fortunately, it’s still possible to find quieter spots in Vietnam! Go to Quy Nhon for its pristine beaches, rich culture and delicious cuisine. Or go to Da Nang to enjoy both a dynamic coastal city and nature.
9. Sète, France

When visiting the South of France, people tend to go to the most popular or well-known places, such as Nice, Cannes, Marseille, Saint-Tropez… and there’s nothing wrong with that, but if you really want to escape the big cities and are looking for a calming getaway, then I recommend going to Sète.
Having had the chance to spend my high school years there, I find that there’s something quite unique and peaceful about this Mediterranean town that makes me want to return every time I’m in the area.
Explore its canals, watch the famous water jousting tournaments, salivate over a plate of moules frites (or mussels with French fries), try a tielle, or sunbathe on one of the beaches.
10. Perast & Kotor, Montenegro

Looking for a serene destination that has it all? Look no further than Montenegro then!
Between breathtaking hikes, superb natural beauty, ancient medieval villages, and lovely beaches, you won’t be disappointed during your journey in this country.
But if you’re tired after a few hikes or simply want the coastal atmosphere, there’s no better places than Perast and Kotor! Although they’re more touristy than other cities in Montenegro (especially during peak season), I’d still say they’re worth a visit!
Planning a 10-day trip to Montenegro? Here’s my itinerary!
11. Brisbane & Kalbarri, Australia

I don’t know about you, but there are some cities that leave a lasting impression on you for one reason or another, or even for no particular reason, and that’s what happened to me with Brisbane.
I don’t know if it was because of the picnics by the water, the pleasant weather, the laid-back atmosphere, the outdoor activities, or something else, but Brisbane won me over. Plus, the city is the ideal size: neither too big nor too small. You’ll love exploring it, even more than other big cities, trust me!
And if you’re looking for a coastal town with dazzling river gorges and a famous national park, head to Kalbarri for a few days!
12. Whakatane, New Zealand

Craving those small town vibes where there’s actually much more to do than you might expect at first glance?
Go to Whakatane and connect with nature away from the crowds. Known for its endless white sand beaches, friendly locals, and wide range of outdoor activities, Whakatane is the ideal coastal destination you’ve ever dreamed of.
Ready to heal your mind and take a well-deserved break from the bustling cities? Choose one of these calming getaways and leave all your worries and tensions behind.
