Quiet and secluded, the best for surfing, family-friendly or just a relaxing break? Ericeira’s many beaches are sure to satisfy. Soak up the sun, swim in the clear waters and enjoy the picturesque surroundings.

Don’t forget that, depending on the season you decide to visit, currents can be quite strong, so it’s best to avoid swimming, but that won’t stop you from sunbathing or admiring the physical prowess of the most experienced surfers.

Best beaches for surfing:

  • Praia de São Julião

  • Praia de São Sebastião

The best way to soak up the unique, artistic atmosphere of this fishing village is to stroll along its pretty cobblestone streets.
You’ll see little whitewashed houses, pass pretty art stores and trendy restaurants, walk through the heart of the old town and feel the peaceful atmosphere typical of coastal towns.

4. Sit and watch the endless waves at Furnas da Ericeira

Give me a sea view, a bit of sun, the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks and I’m more than happy.

Furnas da Ericeira is the best vantage point you can have if you want to feel the salty air and splash on your face! There are even benches to sit and relax while watching the passionate surfers trying to catch some great waves.

5. Hike along the cliffs

Fancy a bit of exercise and some souvenir photos? Ericeira is the place to be!

You can start from the Miradouro Praia Sul, walk along the cliffs and enjoy beautiful views of the waterfront. The good thing is that you can stop whenever you like, or when your feet get too tired. But as Ericeira is quite small, I’m pretty sure the hiker in you will keep walking to feel the breeze on his/her skin and admire the scenery.

6. Try other activities

Being a coastal village means you can not only learn to surf, but also other sports such as kite surfing, stand up paddling… But don’t worry, the town has something for everyone, not just ocean enthusiasts!

If you like yoga or want to give it a try, Ericeira is also known for the quality of its courses and retreats. And no wonder: who wouldn’t love to practice this sport on a beautiful beach surrounded by an even more beautiful panorama? I mean, it’s the perfect kind of place to heal mind and body, isn’t it?!?

Oh, and let’s not forget skateboarding! With so many skateparks, I’m pretty sure you’ll find what you’re looking for here. Don’t forget to visit Skate Park Boardriders Quiksilver Ericeira if you’re in the area!

7. Have a delicious lunch/dinner

You know what else is interesting about Ericeira? Gastronomy, of course! As this is a fishing village, you’ll have the opportunity to taste and savor delicious seafood! The town, though small, has nothing to envy its larger, more dynamic neighbors.

Plus, most of the time you’ll have a breathtaking view of the sea, so what do you think? Are you already convinced?

Here are some of the best places to eat in Ericeira:

  • Mar das Latas Wine & Food
  • Restaurante O Gafanhoto
  • Balagan Ericeira
  • Dear Rose Café

8. Admire the scenery at Miradouro Sala das Visitas

It doesn’t matter whether you come here at sunset or during the day, because the view is one of the most breathtaking I’ve seen in and around Ericeira. Sit on the bench, take as many photos as you like, contemplate the landscape and breathe in the fresh sea air.

It’s also the ideal place to recharge your batteries!

How to get to Ericeira

If you decide to make this a day trip from Lisbon and you’re on a budget, here’s the best way to get to Ericeira.
From Campo Grande in Lisbon, look for the 2740, 2801 or 2803 bus to Ericeira (Terminal Rodoviário). A one-way ticket will cost you $5 for a journey lasting 1 to 1.5 hours.

Always remember to check the bus timetable before you leave, as there aren’t many buses going to Ericeira (you can check directly on the website here).

Pro tip: get yourself a Navegante transport card (50 cents) that you can top up as you go along, especially if you’re planning to stay in Portugal for more than two days or if you want to use public transport occasionally, as this will cost you less than buying a ticket every time.

In a nutshell

Whether you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the big cities for a day trip or longer, Ericeira may just be the solution you’re looking for. The relaxed, peaceful atmosphere and ideal surfing conditions make this a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. And I can’t blame them, because once you’ve visited it, I’m pretty sure you won’t want to leave!
