Hiking Inwangsan: Incredible Panorama And Serenity In Seoul
If you’re already planning a trip to Seoul and you’re an avid hiker or nature lover, chances are you’ve already included Bukhansan and Achasan on your hiking list! And while these two mountains are well worth your sweat, there’s another one that simply took my breath away! Hiked on a whim after looking for a trail along the famous Seoul walls, Inwangsan turned out to be one of my favorite hikes in the capital!
Here’s my guide to this fabulous hike!
Save it for later!
Inwangsan in a few words
Located between Jongno-gu and Seodaemun-gu, as well as close to many other attractions in Seoul, Inwangsan is one of the mountains surrounded by the Seoul City Wall or Hanyangdoseong.
At only 338.2m and with a trail considered on the easy side, a hike to Inwangsan is not only the best way to experience a piece of history, but also to enjoy scenic views away from the commotion of the city center.
So if you want to discover a beautiful trail without the crowds (especially on weekdays), Inwangsan is for you!
The trail to the peak

Since the trail follows the city wall, you probably won’t get lost, I say probably because if you’re like me, you never know, one look and a butterfly chase later and you can easily deviate from your original route.
But off the beaten track explorations aside, you can simply start your hike from Donuimun Gate to Changuimun Gate, or anywhere in between.
Here’s a more detailed map of the trail, generously provided on the city’s official website!
Here are a few highlights from my healing trail!
Mountain Park

You can, of course, start your hike from one of the gates, but you can also choose to get off at Dongnimmun station, follow the road to your right before quickly stumbling upon a pretty little green park and start your exercise with some stairs (remember, this is South Korea).
At some point, you’ll see that the trail actually branches off in several directions, so the choice is up to you. You can visit the pavilion, Haekkolbawi (Skeleton Rock), Guksadang Shrine…
But if you want a more tranquil trail, follow me!
Susongdong Valley

Next, we reach Susondong Valley, aka the best place to relax, breathe in the fresh air and admire the peaceful scenery in the middle of Seoul.
Its little pavilion, clear gurgling waters and pleasant atmosphere make it the ideal spot for a picnic, a break and to escape the stifling heat before getting back on the trail!
The City Wall

Some say you can’t visit Seoul without taking a mountain trail or an excursion along the city wall and I’d have to agree. Whether it’s by night to see the dazzling capital illuminated by millions of tiny stars, or by day to witness such an incredible panorama, its heritage is sure to charm you too.
Originally built to protect the country’s palaces and inhabitants, Hanyangdoseong is today a historic symbol representing Seoul and the whole of South Korea. A fine example of traditional craftmanship, although rebuilt many times, the city wall has been preserved, giving it over 600 years of cultural value.
Inwangsan summit

You’ve finally reached the summit! From here, you’ll understand why Inwangsan is one of my favorite hikes in Seoul! Between the breathtaking views over the city, the fact that you can see other mountains (Bukhansan, Ansan…) as well as Gyeongbokgung Palace: not bad for a short hike!
If you’re not too tired, you can finish your hike with a visit to another quiet spot:
Cheongun Literature Library (청운문학도서관)
Opening hours: 09:00-21:00 every day, closed on Mondays
Entrance: free
Located at the foot of Inwangsan and easily accessible from the trail, refresh your mind in this hanok-style library and enjoy a moment of pure relaxation surrounded by its beautiful, luxurious nature!
Hiking tips for Inwangsan
1. Pack some food and water
Don’t forget to pack some snacks such as protein bars, kimbap, and plenty of water. Dehydration is no joke!
2. Wear comfortable hiking shoes
Because blisters are one of the things hikers hate the most, and because you wouldn’t want to spend the remaining days of your trip unable to enjoy the other attractions.
And don’t forget your first-aid kit and safety items (whistle, power bank)!
3. Remember to apply sunscreen
Sunstroke or a nasty sunburn are other ways of ruining your vacation, so do yourself a favor and don’t forget to apply sunscreen at regular intervals.
4. Check the Air Quality Index (AQI)
Because the air quality is often very polluted in Seoul, so it’s best to check the index before setting off on a hike.
5. Prioritize weekdays
South Koreans are always out and about, and even more so on weekends when they love to spend time with families, friends…, relaxing in parks, shopping or even hiking. So if you want to avoid the crowds, your best bet is to visit attractions or mountains on weekdays!
6. Respect nature and wildlife
As always, nature doesn’t belong to you, so be respectful and keep your trash in your bag until you find a trash can in the city (which can be tricky in South Korea).
Don’t touch or approach animals either. I even met a non-venomous snake on this trail, so be careful where you step!
How to get to Inwangsan
If you intend to take public transportation, you can take the line 3 (orange line) and stop at Dongnimmun or Muakjae station before walking 20/30mn to the beginning of the hike.
FAQ
How long does the hike to the top of Inwangsan take?
To reach the summit, it shouldn’t take you more than 2 hours, 2 hours and a half.
Whatever the season, I’d say it’s best to start the hike in the morning or late afternoon (especially in summer).
How difficult is Inwangsan hike?
The hike is relatively easy, but bear in mind that some parts of the trail are quite rocky. So wear good hiking shoes and be extra careful after rain and in winter.
Do I need hiking poles?
Although the terrain is a bit rocky, I’d say it’s not a trail where you absolutely need hiking poles. But it all depends on your condition and habits.
If you’re used to hiking with poles, or if you have bad knees, for example, you should consider bringing them. But if you find them impractical, you can totally do without.
So, are you ready to discover one of the most underrated trails in Seoul and marvel at the views? Then, Inwangsan awaits you!
