Winter in Europe
Winter can be pretty cold in Europe, with sub-zero temperatures, snow, rain, and damp weather, but overall, it really depends of the destination.
While some countries, like Ireland, commonly experience scattered precipitation, Nordic countries such as Finland and Norway (to name just a few) are true winter wonderland, where people are most likely to build snowmen and have snowball fights.
But if you head further South, then it’s a whole different story, because winter there feels more like early autumn or late spring.
That may be why so many people travel to Europe in the winter, since there’s something for everyone, whether you like snow, lush green landscapes, or sunny, milder temperatures.
Daylight saving time
But if you’re planning a trip to Europe in the winter, there’s one important thing you should know and consider: daylight saving time.
While I hate it and think it should be abolished (they’ve been talking about getting rid of it for years, but nothing has changed), chances are you’ll land in a country where the clock goes back an hour and you’ll lose an hour of daylight during winter.
This means that in some countries, the sun sets between 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
The best solution? Wake up a little earlier so you can enjoy the daylight a little longer and catch the sunset before heading out for dinner.
Visa
Many countries don’t need a visa to enter European countries, but you may need an ETIAS (similar to the ETA) in the future. This system is expected to be implemented in 2027, so remember to check the requirements in advance.
If you’re a country that does require a visa, you must apply for a Schengen visa, which will grant you access to all countries in the European/Schengen area.
A short-term visa usually allows you to stay for up to 90 days in the country.
Language
Depending on the country you’re visiting, people may speak German, French, Spanish, or other languages.
Bear in mind that English isn’t always spoken or understood in many countries, so don’t forget to learn a few local words and use a translation app such as Google Translate.
Money
The official currency of European countries is the Euro (€/EUR). But be aware that some countries such as Sweden, Poland, and a few others, still use their own currencies.
