Solo Beach Day? 7 Simple Hacks To Keep Your Belongings Safe!

You know what else can be a real headache when you’re a solo traveler and you love the great ocean? Not having anyone to keep an eye on your belongings when you go to the beach!

And even though it’s nice to sunbathe with a good book, the call of the ocean, swimming, splashing around, and having fun in the water are just too strong for me to just lie there on the sand!

So, if like me, you love going to the beach too much to wait for someone to come with you, let me give you 7 simple hacks to avoid having your valuables stolen and enjoy the beach worry-free!

Save it for later!

1. Get a waterproof dry bag

Yes, I know it might seem inconvenient to go swimming with a waterproof dry bag, but it’s also the safest way to fully enjoy your day at the beach, since all your valuables: phone, keys, money…, will be protected from water and theft inside your bag.

So if you want to show off your fashion sense, by all means, forget about this tip, but if you’re more concerned about swimming peacefully and enjoying your day, then a dry bag is probably the perfect idea for you!

2. Don’t bring anything

You can live without your phone for a few hours, I promise! Another simple hack, the simplest actually; and one that will spare you the worry of forgetting something at the beach or water seeping into your dry bag (even though there’s like zero chance of that happening, unless you bought one made of cheap material).

Leave your cash, your keys, and phone behind, and leave everything at your hotel. Most of the time, you can entrust them your key and pick it up when you return. And lots of places also have lockers (preferably equipped with a padlock in this case) where you can leave your most cherished and expensive items.

3. Only bring enough cash for your daily needs

If you really need to bring cash, let’s say, because you’ll probably crave a fresh coconut, some snacks, or even to pay for the ride back, then bring only what’s absolutely necessary, such as a small amount, and hide it in a zip lock bag in the sand or under a rock.

As long as you’re not clumsy or forgetful, you’ll easily find it when it’s time to leave the beach.

4. Choose a quiet spot and stay close to the shore

Don’t have a waterproof dry bag handy? Or don’t want to carry one around in the water? Then another easy hack is to pick a quiet spot, pile your belongings near the shore (without leaving your phone or valuables in plain sight) and splash around at the water’s edge, always keeping an attentive eye on your belongings and surroundings.

This solution can, however, be quite tiring, as you’ll never really have time to catch your breath since you’ll always have to swim facing the beach and never stray too far.

Unless you’re a pretty good swimmer and runner in case you see someone suspicious approaching your belongings.

5. Ask someone to watch your stuff

I must come as trustworthy, since people often ask me to watch their things, and I’m of course happy to help out and put anyone’s mind at ease.

So, naturally, this tip made it onto the list of hacks for enjoying the beach worry-free!

True, you might ask someone who ends up stealing your stuff, but chances are people are kind-hearted and just want to appreciate their beach day.

I tend to seek out other solo female travelers, since I’m one myself. Plus, you might strike up a conversation and get acquainted, you never know.

6. Opt for a beach towel with a hidden pocket

I found that by pure chance while scrolling through social media and thought it was pure genius!

No more burying your things in the sand or coming up with smart ways to hide your valuables.

A beach towel with a hidden pocket is the new must-have for total relaxation and peace of mind!

You can find an example of this type of beach towel here, but you can always sew your own hidden pocket if you’re crafty!

7. Use your surroundings

Solo travel is fun but

Sometimes the best hack is to use what you’ve on hand: such as a tree or a sun lounger, for example, combined with a small item that will make all the difference!

I’m talking about a portable lock box that you can lock with your own combination and even attach to anything sturdy enough you’re sure no one will try to steal it and run off with it (unless they’ve an axe or don’t mind carrying a chair around and being seen by everyone on the beach, which, I’m pretty sure goes against the discreet spirit of theft anyway).

A small, but powerful item that’ll make your days at the beach more comfortable!
