How To Make The Most Of Sun Moon Lake

Back to Taiwan and its wonderful nature! Located right in the middle of the island, Sun Moon Lake is a must for all self-respecting nature lovers. So if you’d like to discover a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike, and relax away from the hustle and bustle of the cities, here you go!

Save it for later!

Sun Moon Lake in a few words

Sun Moon Lake view

Legend has it that this magnificent lake was discovered by an ancestor of the Thao tribe (Taiwan’s indigenous people) while hunting a white deer. The tribe then decided to settle here, as the lake offered a great source of food.

Recognized ever since as one of the most beautiful sites to see on your visit to Taiwan, this alpine lake, shaped like a sun on one side and a moon on the other, hence its name, offers a spectacle of great peaceful beauty.

The mountains reflected in the green water, as well as its particular charm and sometimes strange atmosphere, make it an ideal date spot for many romantics.

Visit of Sun Moon Lake

In my humble opinion, and if you don’t have a lot of time in the area, the best way to explore Sun Moon Lake on a day trip from Taichung is to rent a bike and enjoy the beautiful scenery that surrounds it. One day should allow you to fully discover its wonders while allowing you some time to rest between each site.

Here’s my itinerary with its main sights:

1. Longfeng Temple

Opening hours: 08:00-20:00 daily

This Taoist temple, with its magnificent architecture and refined details, is very popular with couples, as the Matchmaking God here specializes in blessings for relationships and marriage, but that doesn’t mean you should skip it if you’re traveling solo, as the view of the lake and the charm of the site are reasons enough to make you want to visit.

2. Shuishe Dam

One of the best places to take photos with the magnificent mountains and serene nature in the background. Made of planks of wood, please respect the signs and get off your bike when using this trail.
Stop for a moment, relax and admire the breathtaking scenery!

3. Hillside Observation Deck

Hillside Observation Deck in Sun Moon Lake

There are plenty of observation decks around Sun Moon Lake and who can blame anyone as the beauty of the place will quickly fill your memory card if you take as many photos as I did.

But this spot is one of my favorites because there’s a bit of shade (which is especially nice when you’re biking all day and it’s hot), the view of the green lake is simply mesmerizing and there was only a couple here when we stopped to rest for a bit.

Plus, there’s a lovely heart-shaped photo corner here! The only minor inconvenience you’re likely to encounter is the presence of a few mosquitoes, so don’t forget to bring repellent!

To get there, follow the bike path and when you come to some stairs on your left, climb down and enjoy.

4. Yongjie and Tongxin bridges + Park

Bridge in Sun Moon Lake

On the way to Xiangshan are two magnificent bridges that you’ll love to cross, wind in your hair, on your trusty companion for the day, namely your bike. The panoramic views, combined with the tranquility of the Sun Moon Lake, are sure to enchant you here.

Once you’ve crossed the arched bridge, take a look to your left and marvel at the bald cypress trees. Hop off your bike, grab your lunch and enjoy this magnificent park for a while! A well-deserved break in the midst of nature’s beauty.

5. Xiangshan Scenic Outlook

Just a few steps, or more precisely a few pedal strokes, from the Xiangshan Visitor Center, you’ll find this calm, unspoilt view of the lake and Lalu Island. The elevated observation platform can be a bit shaky if it’s windy, but this spot is nevertheless a must-see on your bike ride around Sun Moon Lake.

6. Ci’en Pagoda

Opening hours: 09:00-16:30 daily

Built by President Chiang Kai-Shek in memory of his mother in 1971, the 46-meter-high pagoda has become a symbol of Sun Moon Lake and can be seen from everywhere, even when it’s a little misty.

Located at the top of the mountain, it overlooks the entire lake and offers a unique view once you’ve reached the top of the pagoda. If you’re not too tired and have some strength left in your legs, you should include it in the itinerary of your day trip!

7. Wenwu Temple

Opening hours: 08:00-20:00 daily

With its two stone lions guarding the plaza and its breathtaking panorama of the lake, Wenwu Temple is the ideal place to set down your bike and take a leisurely stroll through this immense, majestic site, admiring the intricate architecture and numerous sculptures.

Finish your visit by climbing the stairs behind the temple and admiring the view!

Tips

  • Arrive as early as possible to take time to explore the lake and enjoy every spot.
  • You can rent a bike directly from Giant, located above the 7-eleven, when you arrive by bus.
  • Remember that bikes must be returned by 6 p.m. (all rental stores close at the same time) > opening at 7 a.m.
  • Buy food or snacks in advance (7-eleven right at the bus stop).
  • Bring a hat, mosquito repellent and sunscreen.
  • Check the bus timetable for the return journey before you leave, as there aren’t many, and be prepared to wait, as there are a lot of people on day trip, so arrive early or be prepared to queue at the bus stop for the next one.
  • Respect the ban on bicycles on the Shuishe dam, as the path is made only of wooden planks and is therefore fragile.
  • Drive slowly, as some of the paths are winding and there are lots of people walking and children, so be careful.
  • Check the last ferry departure at each pier if you intend to take one.
  • Don’t forget your EasyCard, which you’ll need to take the bus, or bring cash.
