Hike To The Breathtaking John-Suwan Viewpoint On Koh Tao

It’s no longer a secret that I love island life, drinking coconut water and swimming in emerald green seas. If I had to choose one place where I’d love to settle down, well, it’d be difficult, but one thing’s for sure: Koh Tao, in Thailand would be right at the top of the list. The fresh air, the freedom, the sand between my toes and the ocean as a backdrop, a girl couldn’t really dream of a better place. And if you add to that one of the most breathtaking viewpoints I’ve ever had the chance to see, then I don’t have much more to say than “Welcome to John-Suwan viewpoint”: a place with a panorama like no other on Koh Tao!

Quick History

Wondering if the name of the viewpoint comes from ancient explorers like Christopher Columbus or Magellan? Not really, the story may be a little less historical for some, but that doesn’t change the beauty of the discovery.

The John-Suwan viewpoint, which was in fact discovered by two locals, Mr. Suwan and Mr. John, is today a popular gem offering iconic views of Chalok Bay and Shark Bay. Surrounded by lush jungle and stunning turquoise waters, I bet it’ll soon become your favorite spot on Koh Tao too.

How to get to John-Suwan viewpoint

From Mae Haad Pier or Sairee Beach, the scooter ride takes just 10 to 15 minutes, but if you’ve decided to stay around Chalok Baan Khao Bay, you can definitely walk to the viewpoint, as it will only take you 15 minutes.

To access the 360° views from John-Suwan, follow the road leading to Freedom Beach and get off your scooter once you see the small parking area.

Entrance fee

Just after parking your ride if you’ve come by scooter, you’ll see a small counter where you’ll have to pay an entrance fee of THB50 ($1), which gives you access to both the viewpoint as well as Freedom Beach and its surroundings.

I’ve heard some travelers say that you don’t need to pay the entrance fee if you come at sunrise, for example.

In any case, the small fee is more than worth it, if you ask me!

Best time to go to John-Suwan

If you want to have the place to yourself, consider getting up early and going at sunrise or early morning. That way, you’ll also avoid the scorching heat and enjoy your little hike less drenched in sweat.

If you’re not an early riser, try to go in the late afternoon or for sunset, as most people will already be sunbathing on the beach, but bear in mind that it will be quite hot, so come prepared!

As for the best months, I’d say that to enjoy sunny weather and pleasant temperatures, it’s best to come betwenn December and March, but remember that good weather also means more people.

The hike to John-Suwan

John-Suwan viewpoint is not a difficult hike in itself, taking roughly 20 minutes to reach the top. The only drawbacks are the heat, the humidity and the slippery ground, but above all the fact that you’ll have to climb the last part of the hike.

Don’t worry, though, ropes have been installed to help you get over the final hurdles.

All in all, the hike to John-Suwan is pretty easy, you just have to be careful as with any trail you decide to take.

The trail will take you through rows of palm trees, already giving you a glimpse of what awaits you at the top, before you begin your ascent up the rocky path that will lead you to the final challenge where you’ll have to act like a cat, squeezing your body through the huge boulder and climbing up the last rock.

Admire the views from this unique lookout and lose yourself in the blue colors of the bay below you! Don’t forget to take as many photos as you like too!

What to pack for the hike

I know it’s a very short hike and you may think that it’s not necessary to bring anything but your energy, but as temperatures are no joke in Thailand, I strongly recommend you slather on sunscreen, take plenty of water, a hat and good sturdy shoes. Please avoid climbing in sandals or flip-flops, as these are not the safest, especially for the descent!

Better safe than sorry, right?!?

Nearby attractions

1. Freedom Beach

After completing your descent, walk straight on to the beach in front of you and you’ll be at Freedom Beach! Go for a swim or eat at the nearby restaurant to recharge your batteries before setting off on your next adventure on the island!

2. Taa Toh Lagoon Beach

Taa Toh Beach - trees and view over the bay

Follow the little wooden walkway from Freedom Beach to Taa Toh, a secluded spot far from the noise of the main beach. Here you’ll also find sunbeds where you can take a nap or simply relax and read your favorite book.

What I liked best here was the shade. It may not be the best place to swim if you come during peak hours, but it’s one of the only places where you can enjoy the gentle breeze, sheltered from the beating sun.

Where to stay on Koh Tao

Koh Tao offers many places to choose from, depending on what you’re looking for, here are two of my favorites:

  • Sairee Beach: for the lively nightlife, proximity to the pier and nice restaurants and shops.

And if you want all this while having a peaceful and relaxing vacation, you should check out Koh Tao Silver Na’s Hostel!
  • Chalok Baan Khao Bay: want to enjoy a quieter atmosphere without being too far from the island’s main attractions? Then Chalok Baan Khao Bay is for you. Plus, you’ll be just minutes from John-Suwan viewpoint!

And if you want to combine your holiday with fun and learning a new skill, opt for Hydronauts Diving Resort!

John-Suwan viewpoint is undoubtedly the best viewpoint on Koh Tao, thanks to its breathtaking views and magical, colorful environment. So next time you’re in the area, don’t forget to add this little adventure to your bucket list!
