6 Affordable Asian Destinations For Your Next Fall Vacation

Crisp fall foliage, pleasant weather and fewer crowds: fall is often the favorite season for many outdoor travelers. And with good reason, as it’s also one of the best seasons for those on a budget, thanks to attractive deals and the promise of a more relaxing vacation.

And while the whole world has its own charms during this season, Asia strikes differently. So here are 6 affordable destinations in this part of the world you might want to consider for your next fall getaway!

Save it for later!

Taiwan: leaf peeping, hot springs and festivals

Around Sun Moon Lake near Taichung

Average temperatures in September-November: 22-28°C (depending on region).
Please note: risk of monsoon in the northeast.

Overall, fall, and especially October, is a somewhat “dream” time to visit Taiwan, as the rainy and typhoon season is over in much of the country. Of course, late typhoons can still occur, but this is quite rare.

Escape to the south for warmer temperatures, some beach time or culture, or head to Taichung for a picturesque excursion around Sun Moon Lake.

And if hiking, sunbathing or culture aren’t at the top of your list, visit the hot springs of Beitou for some well-deserved relaxation.

Oh, let’s not forget that autumn is the season for festivals! Eat moon cakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival, immerse yourself in art around Taipei during Nuit Blanche Taipei or discover Hakka culture during Hakka Yimin Festival…!

South Korea: hiking and beautiful landscapes without the cold

Fall in a national park in South Korea

Average temperatures in September-November: 07-22°C (depending on region).

Forget the sweltering heat, walking while drenched in sweat and having to run to the nearest convenience store to enjoy a little air conditioning, fall welcomes you with cooler but agreeable temperatures.

Above all, it’s the best season for that popular exercise that most Koreans love: hiking. Vibrant fall foliage, peaceful trails and breathtaking scenery await you!

Not to mention, visiting South Korea in autumn is perfect if you want to avoid the spring crowds and don’t want to have to wear lots of layers to fight off the harsh winter.

And for nature lovers, you’ll be thrilled to know that some of the prettiest flowers bloom at this time of year: pink muhly, silver grass, sunflowers…, admire and breathe in the lovely scent of these autumn flowers.

The season is also festive, with fireworks festival in Seoul and Busan, and the famous Andong Maskdance Festival!

China: Ancient treasures in autumn colors

Average temperatures in September-November: 10-25°C (depending on region).

I couldn’t talk about Asian destinations without mentioning China, where autumn brings with it snow-covered mountains, lush rice terraces or ancient treasures surrounded by bright orange, yellow and red hues.

Walk along the Great Wall of China, explore the Forbidden City, admire the reflection of natural wonders in Jiuzhaigou Valley or head for the Taklamakan Desert and the unique city of Dunhuang!

In conclusion, coming to China in fall means a combination of wonders and different experiences, each as exceptional as the next. There’s something for everyone there!

Laos: Adventure and natural beauty

Laos - a great destination to visit in fall

Average temperatures in September-November: 23-31°C.
Please note: there may be rainy days as late as October.

The wet season may still be on the agenda until October, but if you don’t mind a little rain, Laos is an extraordinary country to visit at this time, especially for budget travelers. Cheap but delicious food, breathtaking scenery and friendly locals are reasons enough to include it on your bucket list, if you ask me.

And if you’re still afraid of the monsoon, you can prioritize the month of November, aka the start of the dry season. Bear in mind that you’re likely to encounter more people, though!

Swim in turquoise waters under a waterfall, glide along the Mekong river, watch an exciting boat race and wander through the delicious local markets!

While it’s a bit risky to venture into the south of the country at this time of year, Northern Vietnam enjoys a nice weather, making it a popular Asian destination for escaping the cool temperatures that prevail everywhere else.

So, if you like towering mountains, magnificent golden terraces as far as the eye can see, scenic drives and a romantic atmosphere over an egg coffee, look no further than Vietnam!
