Going on a microadventure in Taipei

Are You On A Tight Budget Or Short On Time? Go On A Microadventure!

I don’t know if you’ve heard of this term before, but microadventures are becoming more and more common, especially in a world where not everyone has the time or budget to travel far.

Fortunately, and thanks to its many advantages, people have discovered a new (or at least pretty new) way to enjoy some relaxing time by going on a microadventure.

So what is a microadventure? Is it for you and what are its main advantages or disadvantages? Let’s dive right in!

Save it for later!

What is a microadventure?

Enjoying the outdoors in Taipei

First of all, if you’re wondering who came up with the term “microadventure”, it was British adventurer, Alastair Humphreys (you can check out his website here). He inspires adventurers of all ages to embark on exciting adventures, big or small, so feel free to navigate his blog for even more ideas for your next trip.

But let’s get back to microadventures. Here’s how you could define them:

  • usually pretty close to home
  • budget-friendly
  • simple (no frills or hassle)
  • short (less than a day or a weekend)
  • less impactful on nature

Going on a microadventure is all about relaxing without worrying about packing your bag for weeks. It also usually requires little or no equipment, food…

In a world dominated by concrete jungles, where people are so busy with their lives that it can be sometimes difficult to unwind and take time for themselves, microadventures have become a popular way to explore the surroundings of one’s home and recharge one’s batteries.

Advantages/disadvantages of a microadventure

Personally I can’t think of any disadvantages, as I find that this way of traveling has nothing but advantages. The only real risk would be becoming addicted, to the point of going on a microadventure every weekend or whenever you have time (and there’s nothing wrong with that).

Now, let’s look at the advantages:

  • it’s the best way to disconnect (leave your phone in your pocket or bag and only take it out to snap a few photos)
  • it’s an opportunity to take a well-deserved break from the hustle and bustle of the city
  • it’s a way to overcome creative block
  • it’s cheap
  • it’s exciting
  • it’s easy to organize
  • there are thousands of possibilities

And even though some people tend to tell you that it can’t be considered an adventure or a trip, they’re wrong. Also known as micro travel because they’re short, microadventures are just like any other excursion or trip you would take.

Since every adventure is different and what may seem like a challenge or an exploration to you may not necessarily be for someone else, just do what you want and don’t focus on what others say.

After all, isn’t adventure about stepping outside of your comfort zone, surpassing yourself, and trying new things you wouldn’t normally do, but also doing something that will leave you with unforgettable memories and that you find thrilling?

With that said, here are some ideas for your next outdoor microadventures!

  1. Great article! It was filled with so much helpful information. I love micro-adventures, because I can be back home in no time at all!

  2. My favorite microadventure is spending a day at a state park about an hour away — just enough distance to feel like a getaway, but close enough to fit into a Saturday. I always come home feeling reset. Love how you captured that sense of adventure without the big trip!
