1. Pohang: thrills and coastal beauty

Just 2 hours by bus from Busan, Pohang welcomes you with its charming coastal landscapes, its quieter but just as charming vibes than those as in the big cities, and its fun attractions.

Whether you’d like to experience the thrill of walking on the famous, slightly wobbly Spacewalk in Hwanho Lake Park, or simply take in the tranquil sea views around the town and enjoy some delicious Korean beef soup (gomtang) or seafood, Pohang may not attract the most tourists at first glance, but the city is definitely worth a visit, if you ask me.

Not to mention that if you’re a sunrise lover, Pohang is the place to go, as its location makes it the first place in South Korea where you can observe this magnificent natural phenomenon of everyday life.

My main highlights: Yeongilgyo and Yeongildae beach and Homigot Sunrise Square!

Thing to know: the Pohang Homigot Sunrise Festival takes place every year on December 31 to greet the arrival of the New Year!

2. Gyeongju: history and charm all year round

Gyeongju - day trip from Busan

I always say that a trip to South Korea isn’t really complete until you’ve seen Gyeongju, and while I’m not a big fan of touristy places, there’s something special and quite indescribable about this town, located less than an hour from Busan.

History buff or not, the charm, ancient treasures and magic of Gyeongju have kept me coming back again and again (I still need to visit in winter, though).

Whatever the season, there’s always something waiting for you in Gyeongju, and chances are you’ll never get bored here!

3. Tongyeong: perfect for a seascape

To escape the hustle and bustle of the city, hop on a quick 1.5/2hr bus ride to Tongyeong.

Once under the radar, the city is beginning to attract visitors thanks to its scenery between mountains and sea, its authenticity and the many islands to visit nearby.

The port town may be small, but it doesn’t lack in beaches, mountains, historic sites and parks, enough to delight all those who want to enjoy the serenity of the blue ocean!

4. Gimhae: more than just an airport

We often associate the location of airports with what they are: a means of getting in and out of the country, but we rarely see them as an attractive area where we can have fun or pass the time. South Korea proved me wrong, however: some cities, have more to show than just the airport, and Gimhae is no exception.

So if you decide to stay on the other side of the city, or simply want to explore outside the city and its well-known attractions, don’t forget to check out Gimhae Nakdong River Rail Park: a fun railway-themed park, the Ancient Tombs in Daeseong-dong, Bunsanseong Fortress or Gimhae Astronomical Observatory!

5. Ulsan: bamboo forest and suspension bridge

Sandy beach, sea breeze and fun suspension bridge: it’d be a shame to miss out on the many sights Ulsan has to offer, especially considering that the city is only an hour and a half from Busan.

Oh, and let’s not forget the Taehwagang Bamboo Forest for nature lovers who would like to see more than just the sea.

Whether you’d like to walk above the water in Daewangam Park, heal your mind among tall bamboos, see thousands of fragrant roses in Ulsan Grand Park, or visit a serene temple, a day trip there is a must if you’re looking for new and exciting adventures.

6. Geoje & Oedo: slow down and enjoy island vibes

Another 1.5 hours by bus from Busan before reaching turquoise waters and idyllic spots.

With its coastal trails, stunning beaches, lovely fishing village and breathtaking views such as Geoje Windy Hill, Geoje offers travelers a well-deserved respite from their busy lives.

And you can even take your exploration a step further by taking the ferry and visiting the magnificent Oedo island and its Western-style botanical garden.

7. Daegu: dynamism and culture

Daegu by night -trip from Busan

More of a city gal/guy? Then head to Daegu for a dose of dynamism and city life with a touch of nature!

South Korea’s fourth-largest city has nothing to envy its bigger sisters, quite the contrary. Between its animated, melodious streets, its shopping mall which is also a small theme park by the way, but also its tranquil lake and panoramic night views, Daegu, often overlooked by visitors, will surprise you, in a good way!

And at less than two hours from Busan by bus or train, there’s no excuse not to visit this vibrant city!
